Description:

An exciting encounter between Maya Friedman and Maarten van Veen! A completely improvised cello and piano recital on the theme of Nut, Goddess of the Universe! The album "Nuit" is the result of an exciting encounter between Maya Friedman, a versatile cellist from Moscow, Russia and A&R manager of the Trptk label, and Maarten van Veen, a leading Dutch pianist & conductor. The two met in August 2020 and immediately felt a musical connection. After deep discussions, the extraordinary idea of recording a completely improvised recital on the central theme of Nuit, the ancient Egyptian goddess of the universe (night sky), was born. Van Veen's hobby of stargazing through a telescope at night also enthused Friedman and became the starting point for a very exciting duet in which the two musicians explored and found each other's essence. Friedman began the recital empty-handed, not touching his cello for five days before recording. An endless series of creative improvisations fill the church in Schiedam, Holland, a church with a wonderful acoustic space, with dense music.Maya Friedman, who was called a child prodigy from her early childhood when she began playing the cello, has since been brought over to the Yuri Bashmet Foundation and is a versatile artist who has appeared on various TV and radio programs. She studied under Dmitry Ferstman (father of Riza Ferstman), who is known as a master teacher. She won the musician-coveted Dutch Classical Talent Award in 2019, and her album (TTK0009) of Prokofiev's opera "The Fire Angel," arranged for cello and piano with pianist Artem Belogrov, was named by Stereophile magazine in the US as " Stereophile magazine in the U.S. praised it as "the best chamber music album I have heard in the last 20 years. Maarten van Veen is the conductor of the Dören Ensemble and is also known for his duo piano playing with his brother Jeroen van Veen and Ralph van Raat, and has recently recorded a new work by John Adams.
