Blur drummer Dave Rowntree will release his debut album, Radio Songs, on January 20, 2023, on Cooking Vinyl. Growing up in Colchester, Essex, in the southeast of England, Dave Rowntree used to sit at the kitchen table with his father and build radio kits. They would then set up an antenna in the garden to receive stations from around the world, listening to exotic languages and music, and imagining life in faraway lands. The radio was a constant for me. It was one of the stabilizing factors in my life," Rowntree recalls. Radio Songs is an electronically based album with an orchestral fringe, filled with great songs with Rowntree's solid, expressive vocals that will surprise many. He has sung backing vocals on many of Blur's albums and live shows over the years, but this is the first time he has taken the mic as a singer himself.Produced by Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts) and co-written by Gary Go and H□gni Egilsson. Recorded in Budapest, the album features beautiful orchestration that creates an album that is both expansive in sound and deeply personal at the same time. Dave Rowntree, best known as Blur's drummer, is also a versatile film and TV composer, podcaster, light aircraft pilot (and instructor), lawyer, and former Labor Party member. I've always been a bit of a wanderer," he says. I'm never satisfied. I guess I'm endlessly ambitious," Rowntree says. That ambition led to the creation of Radio Songs, "an album I've been thinking about for the last few years," he says. I'm into a lot of things at a moment's notice," he says. His recent film and TV compositions include the Netflix sci-fi series "The One," the Bros. documentary "After the Screaming Stops," and BBC One's technological crime thriller "The Capture.Upcoming projects include a second series of The Capture and a third season of Disney+'s War of the Worlds. He also flies his co-owned Cirrus SR22 (a small private airplane) weekly, but his parallel life as a lawyer is interrupted to tour with the reunited Blur and The Magic Whip. Instead, when the band's activities once again came to a halt, he served as a Labor Party member of Norfolk County Council from 2017 to 2021. 'That was great. I believe passionately in localism. I think knocking on doors and offering help is a really powerful and wonderful thing to do,' he says.
