Andris Poga has earned a high level of recognition and trust in Japan through numerous guest appearances with major Japanese orchestras—including the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the New Japan Philharmonic, and the Nagoya Philharmonic—as well as performances at the Pacific Music Festival (PMF). In recent years, he stepped in for Vladimir Fedoseyev at a special subscription concert of the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, and in May 2026, he will conduct Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4 with the NHK Symphony Orchestra—all of which has earned him a high level of recognition and trust in Japan. Having served as assistant conductor under his fellow Latvian Andris Nelsons at the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he is garnering attention as a figure carrying on the legacy of Latvian maestros such as the Jansons family and Nelsons. This release is the second in the Lawo series featuring the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, a long-established Norwegian orchestra where he has served as principal conductor since the 2021–22 season. Following the previous release featuring Nielsen’s Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4 (LWC1408), this album presents Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8. Composed during World War II, Symphony No. 8 is regarded as a more introspective work that delves deeply into the tragedy of war and human suffering, in contrast to the extroverted character of Symphony No. 7, “Leningrad,” composed around the same time. The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra’s taut, crystalline sound, combined with Poga’s lucid musical interpretation, vividly brings to life the tension, tranquility, and profound spirituality inherent in this multi-layered work.
