World War II began, and on April 9, 1940, Norway was blitzed and occupied by the German army; on June 9, King Hakon VII and Crown Prince Olav, together with government ministers, boarded a British cruiser from Tromsø and went into exile. The King established a provisional government in England. The collaboration across the North Sea with the resistance movement against Germany in the motherland began. And until the King's return home on June 7, 1945, Norwegian merchant ships served as convoys and transports for the allies, and many sailors lost their lives. ...... Krigsseilerrekviem (Sailors' Requiem) is a memorial to them, with monuments in the port city of Bergen and in Bigdøy, Oslo. Texts from the diaries and memoirs of Norwegian merchant seamen, poems by Norwegian poets, and the Latin liturgical text of the Requiem are sung by soloists and chorus. The composer, Bjørn Måten Kristoffersjön, is one of Norway's postmodern composers. He received his doctorate with a thesis on Johan Svendsen. He is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Music at the University of Oslo, where he teaches composition, arranging, harmony, orchestration, and counterpoint.The magnificent oratorio "The Lapse of Time" performed at the "Oslo Life Sciences Society 2022" at the University of Oslo was made into a CD (Simax PSC 1392) and nominated for the "Spelman Prize" (Norwegian Grammy Award) in 2022. The Norwegian Naval Band (SFMK) (Western Norwegian Military Band) is a "professional" band in the Norwegian Armed Forces. Known for the beauty of its melodic lines and harmonies and the power of its music, the band is deeply rooted in the musical life of the city of Bergen, where it is based. This is the second LAWO Classics album after "The Armed Man" (LWC 1223). The orchestra features mezzo-soprano Astri Norstad and baritone Magnus Ingemun Scherstad, who studied at the Norwegian National College of Music and the Royal Danish Opera Academy; tenor Torbjorn Gulbransøy, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London; bass Magne Fremmel, a graduate of the Rogaland Conservatory in Stavanger; and bassist Kathleen Hartmann, who studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Music and the Royal Danish Opera Academy in Stavanger. and bass Magne Fremmelried, a graduate of the Rogalan Conservatory in Stavanger, and singers who are or have been soloists with the Norwegian National Opera.Conductor Byatte Engeset studied with Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy, where he received his diploma. She has conducted orchestras and bands in Norway, England, and elsewhere, giving concerts and making over 40 CD recordings. The War Sailor's Requiem was commissioned in 2020 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Norwegian Naval Band, and was performed at the Oslo Concert Hall on May 31, 2022, after its premiere was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
