Description:
Concerto for cello and piano by Norwegian composer Hermann Vogt. Herman Vogt was born in Drammen in 1976 and studied composition at the Norwegian National College of Music with Lasse Thoresen, Olav Anton Tommesen, Henrik Hirstenius, and Björn Kruse. He continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Martijn Pading and Louis Andriessen, and has participated in master classes and sessions with Salvatore Sciarrino and others. His compositions include orchestral, instrumental, and chamber music, and his works have been performed by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the Oslo Sinfonietta, "BIT20," and the Oslo Philharmonic. The "Cello Concerto" was commissioned by Audun Sanvik. It is in three movements (Fantasia, Canzona, and Sonata) and is a work of great emotional range, rich in expression and deep lyricism. 2022 saw the first performance of the revised version by Sanvik and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Sanvik (b.1979) has released several albums on LAWO Classics. The "Piano Concerto" is modeled on Mozart's piano concerto, but with the addition of two percussionists. The three movements, "Largo - Allegro con moto," "Adagio serino, sempre tranquillo," and "Vivace - Adagio largamente - Vivace," include virtuoso passages on the piano. Soloist Sweyng Bjeran (b.1970) is one of the leading pianists of his generation. He studied with Hans Reigraaf at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and was named "Best Young Musician" by the Norwegian Concert Association in 1999. His album of sonatas by Scarlatti and Mendelssohn was nominated for a Spellman Award (Norwegian Grammy), and his concertos by Chopin and Schumann (LWC 1149) with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra also attracted attention. Anna-Maria Helsing (b.1971) is a Swedish conductor of Finnish descent. She studied at the Sibelius Academy with Leif Sjöggerstam, Atzo Almira, and Jorma Panula, and has served as principal conductor of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra. she will be appointed principal conductor of the Vasa City Orchestra for the 2025-2028 season.
