Sibelius, sung by Marianne Beate Schellan! Conducted by Petr Popelka, a rising star from the Czech Republic! One of LawoClassics’ main artists, she is also known for her regular collaborations with Masaaki Suzuki and Bach Collegium Japan. She is scheduled to appear in the New National Theatre’s 2022/2023 season opera, *Giulio Cesare* by Handel, scheduled for October 2022. On her 17th album released by Lawo Classics, she sings orchestral versions of art songs written by the Finnish master Sibelius, accompanied by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra led by rising Czech star Petr Popelka. Some of the orchestral arrangements were done by Sibelius himself, while others were created by his contemporaries, such as Simon Parme (1897–1969) and Sibelius’s son-in-law, conductor Jussi Jallas (1908–1985), Ernest Pangoo (1887–1942), and Ivar Hermann (1891–1994), as well as a modern arrangement by Colin Matthews (b. 1946). We present a selection from the four song cycles Op. 17, Op. 36, Op. 37, and Op. 38. The concert is conducted by Petr Popelka, a promising young Czech conductor who has served as Principal Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra since the fall of 2020 and was appointed Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra in September 2022. Born in Prague in 1986, he began his career as a double bassist with the Staatskapelle Dresden (Dresden State Opera Orchestra). He is now based in both Hamburg and Prague, rapidly establishing himself with Europe’s leading orchestras and at major opera houses. He has already conducted nearly all of Norway’s major orchestras and has appeared several times at the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet. This up-and-coming maestro is set to make his Japan debut in August 2022, performing with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (as a substitute for Matthias Pinch). Tokyo M-Plus
