Marianne Beate Schelan! Singing melancholic works from 17th century Italy! In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the baroque ensemble Oslo Circles has recorded a new album, "Lamento". Featuring Marianne Beate Schelan (Kielant), one of Norway's and Europe's leading singers and well known in Japan for her frequent performances with the Bach Collegium Japan, as soloist, the ensemble performs sweet and melancholic works of 17th century Italian Baroque music. The main program features "The Tears of the Virgin Mary" by Giovanni Felice Sanchez, "This Thorny Sting" by Benedetto Ferrari, and "Because It is Time to Sleep" by Tarquinio Merla. Interspersed among these three works will be solo violins and ensemble pieces, reflecting the "lament" aspect of the theme. The Oslo Circles was founded in 2015 by baroque violinist Astrid Kirschner.The ensemble features an international cast of faces, including Italian-born baroque violinist Maria Ines Zanovello, Japanese baroque cellist Mime Brinkmann, Swedish luthier Carl Newleen and harpsichordist Marijola Martello. They have appeared at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival as well as festivals in France and Italy, including Croatia's 2019 "Varazdin Baroque Night" with Marianne Beate Schelan, who won the Critics' Prize for this album's program.
