Norwegian Navy Band / Stars of the Sea—Concert March Collection A “Concert March Collection” commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Navy Band has been released! The roots of the Norwegian Navy Band date back to the Bergen Fortress in 1792. With a history spanning 216 years, the Norwegian Navy Band has been recognized since January 1, 2013, as one of Norway’s five professional military bands. The band has earned the support of a wide audience with a diverse program that extends beyond military marches and classical music to include jazz, pop, rock, and contemporary music. In 2008, the band was awarded “Performer of the Year” by the Norwegian Composers’ Association. Its repertoire includes not only works by Norwegian composers but also well-known classics by composers such as John Philip Sousa and Kenneth Alford. In particular, the commemorative march commissioned from Svein Henrik Giske [1973–] in 2014 to mark the band’s anniversary is a refreshing and majestic piece that evokes images of Norway’s vast landscapes. The cohesive, well-structured performance—combined with its wide range of dynamics and expression—is definitely worth a listen!
