Formed around guitarist Eric Berg and active since the 90s in Athens, Georgia, JapanCakes is an indie rock/post-rock band. Releasing works through Kindercore and Darla Records, the group has carved out a unique position within US indie with their extended chord repetitions and open jam sensibility. Released in 2007, this album—a complete cover of MY BLOODY VALENTINE's masterpiece 'LOVELESS'—left a strong impression on core shoegaze fans with its unconventional approach and high level of completion. Maintaining the same track order as the original MY BLOODY VALENTINE release from '91, they replaced all vocals and lead melodies with pedal steel and cello, transforming shoegaze's roaring sound into a country-tinged warmth and ambient expansiveness. The tactile quality of the sound centers not on the wall of noise created by KEVIN SHIELDS' guitar, but on the sustained tones of the pedal steel and the long notes of the cello.The opening track "ONLY SHALLOW" traces its distinctive chord progression with smooth pedal steel glissandos and a thick bassline, while drums and organ transform the original drive into a gentle undulation. "TO HERE KNOWS WHEN" reinterprets shoegaze's signature shimmer with cello harmonies and deeply reverberated guitars, maintaining a dreamy mood while evolving into a more defined sound. In "WHEN YOU SLEEP" and "SOON," pedal steel and organ bring Americana elements to the forefront of the melody, making MY BLOODY VALENTINE's songs resonate like standards from another genre.
