Description:
The second release on the 2L label by the Norwegian vocal ensemble Trio Medieval, which has produced hits for ECM! This ambitious work features the "Old Hall Manuscript Mass of the Virgin", a collection of manuscripts representing the late medieval period in England, and new compositions! High-quality recording by 2L, a specialist in immersive audio! The Old Hall Manuscript is the largest and most important collection of English and French religious music from the late 14th and early 15th centuries, largely forgotten by history for 400 years until it was discovered in a Catholic seminary in the late 19th century. The manuscripts contain pieces such as polyphony and the Antiphon of the Virgin Mary, usually used for Mass, and are considered the best source of religious music of the late Middle Ages. Following "Consolation" (2L 165SABD) by the Norwegian vocal ensemble Trio Mediaval, which has had a number of hits on ECM, 2L's second album is a "Mass for the Virgin Mary" featuring selections from the Old Hall Scroll and newly written compositions. From the Codex were selected Mass texts such as "Kyrie," "Gloria," and "Agnus Dei," as well as pieces such as John Cook's "Stella Cheri" and Lionel Power's "Ave Regina Celorum," while the Trio Medievale included Norwegian composer Marianne Leidasdasdal, who was a member of the Trio Medievale. New music was commissioned from Trio Medievale to Marianne Leidasdattel Eriksen of Norway and David Lang of the United States. Lang's "Alleluia" and "Amen" are "meditations" on words common to both Judaism and Christianity, while Ericksen's "The Sun Shines on All" uses a passage from Petronius' Satyricon as its text. The recording session took place at the Uranienborg Church in Oslo, produced by 2L's Motten Lindberg, a specialist in immersive audio. Catarina Vicens (1983?) from Chile participated, playing the small organ "organette".[Pure Audio Blu-ray disc and SACD hybrid disc are included in this album set. SACD hybrid discs can be played on SACD players and CD players, but Pure Audio Blu-ray discs cannot be played on CD or DVD players, so please use a Blu-ray player or a Blu-ray compatible PC] King International
