The latest recording from 2L, the Grammy-winning audiophile label Rarities by Ole Bull, the Paganini of the North Morten Lindberg, who produces and engineers for 2L, won the Best Immersive Audio Album award at the 62nd Grammy Awards in 2020 for the album "LUX" (2L150SABD) - a win that came after thirty-six nominations since 2006. His first album since that award is a collection of works by Ole Bull (1810-1880), hugely popular in his day as a violin virtuoso. It follows the "Works for Violin and Orchestra" album (2L067SABD) released by the Norwegian violinist Annar Folleso (b. 1972) in 2010, the bicentenary of Bull's birth, and offers a programme of five pieces that no one but Bull himself ever played. "Largo posato e Rondo capriccioso" opens with dark chords in D minor and ends in humoresque vein; Halfdan Kjerulf described it as "music of rich religious feeling". It is performed here from an incomplete manuscript orchestrated by Nikolai Riise, with the missing passages and the cadenza composed by Folleso. "Norges Fjelde (Norway's Mountains)" is a potpourri of Norwegian dances and melodies, completed by Wolfgang Plagge, who added a polska and folk tunes and closed the work with "Bergensiana". "Vilspel i Lio" takes its title from the phrase folk musicians use for playing from memory; Kjerulf called it "a spring song of the mountains", and it is heard here in Plagge's reconstruction. The "Fantasy on 'Lilly Dale'" is based on a ballad by the American composer H. S. Thompson which in Norway, under the title "Guds kjaerlighet (God's love)", is sung as a wedding hymn. "The Last Romance" is Plagge's arrangement for violin and piano of the manuscript of a choral setting that Bull dedicated to Bjornstjerne Bjornson. Folleso is joined by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra under Eun Sun Kim (b. 1980), who takes up the post of Music Director of San Francisco Opera from the 2021-22 season.
