Description:
Grieg, Blusta, Ohlsen, and ThoresenA piece that traces the "source" of Norwegian folk musicEdvard Grieg once spent two years in Copenhagen after completing his studies in Leipzig, and then went to Rome. The idea for this trip, it is said, came about because he wanted to understand how art music could develop from folk music by coming into contact with Italian opera, where "folk music and Neapolitan song were enhanced. Grieg then focused on demonstrating "Norwegian identity" by reclaiming the music that had been passed down in Norway from generation to generation in the form of art music. Folk music must be proud, pure, and authentic. The album "Sources" by Arctic Philharmonic violinist Sander Tingstad (1991-) is a collection of Norwegian folk music that is both the music of the composers and the music of the composers. The concept of the album is to show the inspiration that folk music has given to the composer's music and the performer's performance style in its various forms.Edvard Grieg's "Violin Sonata No. 2 in G major" was composed in Kristiania (now Oslo) in the summer of 1867, a time when he was seriously contemplating the creation of a unique Norwegian culture. It is the most "Norwegian" of his three sonatas, and is regarded as the stepping stone to his "No. 3," a beautiful fusion of "folk music and art music" that was to take place about 10 years later. Pianist Ingrid Breie Nyhus (1978-), who performs with him in this piece, was born to folk musicologist Sven Nyhus and grew up surrounded by folk music. He earned his doctorate with a dissertation on "Interpretation and Performance Between Folk and Pianism." He attracted attention with his recording of Grieg's "Slottel" (Simax PSC 1287) in a "new piano version" revised by his father. In this performance of the "Violin Sonata," Tingstad and her "improvised" music provide a bridge from the first to the second movement.(1/2) King International
