The debut album by Sandra Reed Haga, the young Norwegian cellist who has captured the world’s attention The debut album by Norwegian cellist Sandra Reid Haga, born in 1994. Since making her debut at Wigmore Hall at the age of 12, she has won numerous international competitions, been invited to prestigious music festivals, and performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Janine Jansen, Paul Lewis, and Leif Ove Andsnes. She has also been recognized by world-class artists such as Daniel Barenboim and Anne-Sophie Mutter, and is a rising star currently at a pivotal juncture in her musical career. This album features two masterpieces of cello concertos composed in the 19th century: “Variations on a Rococo Theme,” composed for Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, a close friend of Tchaikovsky. Although Fitzenhagen made bold revisions to the original score for the premiere, the work was restored to its original form through scientific and technical means in 1955, and performances based on the original version are now the norm. Based on a theme written in the Rococo style popular in the mid-18th century, the piece showcases the cello’s lyrical quality and virtuosity, allowing listeners to fully enjoy Sandra Reed Haga’s dynamic performance. Also featured is Dvořák’s masterpiece, the Cello Concerto, inspired by folk songs from his native Bohemia and African-American spirituals, in which he lavishly displays beautiful melodies. Sandra Reed Haga delivers a performance brimming with vitality through her expansive, lyrical phrasing.
