Arne Nurheim was one of the most influential figures of Norwegian music in the 20th century. Arne Nurheim, who completed the album one month before his death, is regarded as the greatest contributor to Norwegian music in the 1950s, when the air of national romanticism dominated the country's music, leading it to the world trend of modernism, which enabled Norwegian music to establish its identity after the world wars. He was to have celebrated his 80th birthday in 2011, but he died on June 5, 2010. A few weeks before his death, the album Epitaphio, with all the recordings completed, will be released. Nurheim was given the highest honor for a Norwegian artist in 1982, living in the house "Grotten", a part of the royal palace in Oslo, and this album is a good monument to Nurheim's achievements, who, like Grieg and Söverloo, was given a Norwegian state funeral after his death.The inspiration for "Canzona" is said to have come from listening to a canzona by Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli and the effect created by the contrast between the high and low voices. The score of "Epitaphio" for orchestra and magnetic tape is based on a poem by the Italian poet Salvatore Quasimodo: "All men stand alone in the center of the earth, pierced by a ray of sunlight, and find themselves in the dusk. The inspiration for "Monolith for Orchestra" came from the marble sculptures in Oslo's Vilgerand Park. Nurheim is said to have been fascinated by the colors and reflections of the marble, and thought that "the rock is not a lifeless mass, but a symbol of human life. This piece was commissioned by the "International Music Competition Program" in Tokyo, and was premiered by the New Japan Philharmonic at Suntory Hall in 1991.The "Adieu" was composed in memory of Witold Lutoslawski, who died in February 1994, and was performed at the festival in Warsaw in the fall of the same year. The "Phonos" is a reworking of the single-movement "Monolith" into a three-movement concerto. Beginning with a trombone fanfare, the music is characterized by strong energy and rhythmic propulsion.
