A Hidden Treasure of Romantic Organ Music: Merkel’s Moving Third Volume This four-disc series presents the works of Gustav Merkel (1827–1885), one of the pillars of the organ music tradition in central Germany, centered on Dresden and Leipzig. Norwegian organist Halgeir Schager (1955–), who completed a doctoral dissertation on the interpretation of Merkel’s works, performed on organs throughout Germany—including at Dresden Cathedral—on the first volume (PSC1273) and second volume (PSC1274)—recorded on German organs, including those at Dresden Cathedral—have been highly acclaimed as the finest performances for introducing Merkel’s music, which had been largely forgotten since the 20th century, to a new audience. Volume 3 features six pieces, including Sonatas Nos. 4, 5, and 6, as well as the Fantasy in D minor—one of Merkel’s most frequently performed organ works. Recorded on the Karl August Buchholz organ at St. Mary’s Church in the city of Wald. An organ with a deep, beautiful tone—perfectly suited to Merkel’s music—was selected for this recording.
