Gustav Merkel, a Leading 19th-Century German Virtuoso Volumes 1 and 2 of a 4-Volume Series by Leading Expert Schager Now on Sale Gustav Merkel (1827–1885) was one of the leading organists of 19th-century Central Germany, alongside Adolf Hesse, Christian Heinrich Link, August Gottfried Ritter, and Johann Gottlieb Schneider. Born in a village in Saxony, he studied at the teacher training college in Bautzen and went on to be active primarily in Dresden and Leipzig. As a composer, he wrote mainly piano and organ pieces, with a total of 183 works bearing opus numbers. His style was modeled on Viennese Classicism, and influences from Bach and Mendelssohn have also been noted. This four-disc series presenting Merkel’s organ works is the result of Schierge (b. 1955), who completed a doctoral dissertation on the interpretation of Merkel’s organ works, translating his research findings into sound while also introducing these works—which had been largely forgotten since the 20th century—to a new audience. In pursuit of the sound the composer envisioned, the recordings feature historical instruments from Merkel’s era, such as the organ at Dresden Cathedral—where Merkel served as organist—and the C. G. Jemlich organ at St. Laurentius Church in Elsterberg. The booklet provides detailed descriptions of each organ’s pipe configuration and stop combinations (registrations). The Urban Kreuzbach organ at St. Catherine’s Church in Karenberg, featured in Volume 2, produces a highly transparent sound and leaves a gentle impression.
