The long awaited! Christian McBride's new group "New Jawn" is now available! Christian McBride, who has been a part of Chick Corea and Pat Metheny's group, and has also been a part of his own group/projects, is now more than just a bassist, but a creator with a huge presence, and with this new release, his appeal is once again proven. This group is a quartet without chordal instruments! In recent years, Christian McBride's activities have included piano trio, vibraphone, inside straight with piano, and big band. However, that is why Christian himself was curious to see what would happen with this format, and he took on the challenge, and the results are here! With Christian's bass at the core of the band, there are deep swing numbers and blues, aggressive and bold abstract expressions, as well as beautiful and elegant ballads. In a word, the four members have created a chemical reaction that only a piano-less band can achieve, and have created the greatest common denominator of music! The unit's mix of tradition and innovation, controlled and beautiful ensembles, and the thrill of improvisation makes it no exaggeration to say that this is a group to watch in the 21st century. The group got its start in December 2015 at the annual Village Vanguard two-week performance opportunity.Christian McBride formed a trio with the now well-known pianist Christian Sands, and while recording two albums with the trio, he was considering a new direction for Sands, considering the "freedom of Sands' own activities" that had become so popular. At that time, he had a chance encounter with Josh Evans, a trumpeter who had been trained by Jackie McLean and had played with legends such as Rashid Ali, Oliver Lake, and Billy Harper at a young age, and had also recorded with artists such as Kenny Barron and Mark Turner. The front two pipes are then joined by Marcus Strickland, whom Christian McBride himself describes as "the heir to Branford Marsalis. The drummer who plays the rhythm section is Nasheet Waits, whom Christian has known for more than 20 years, but has never played with him before, and whom he has always respected. Christian describes Nasheet as "a whirlwind drummer who is always creative," and this is evident in the songs M2, 4, and 7. Starting with the opening track, which features a unique rhythm that expresses a line of drunks walking in a row, M4.5 is a thrilling explosion of a chordless quartet, M3 is Josh Evans' homage to Thelonious Monk, M6 is reminiscent of Billy Strayhorn's aesthetics, and M4.6 is the most beautiful track on the album, with the drummer's voice reminiscent of Wayne Strayhorn's. M6, and M9, in which the members' respect for Wayne Shorter's compositions and their playing ability burst forth.
