Cecile McLorin Salvant, winner of two consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2016 and 2017, is back with her first new album in a year! Cecile has been receiving rave reviews from all quarters since 2010, when she became the winner of the Seronious Monk International Jazz Competition, a gateway to success for jazz artists. She was voted "Jazz Album of the Year" and "Top Female Vocalist" by Downbeat Critics Poll in two categories, and won NPR's "Best Jazz Vocalist of the Year" and "Best Jazz Vocalist" awards. She has been a firm fixture on the global stage as one of the hottest female vocalists in the world today. This album features 14 studio recordings she made as a duo with the remarkable pianist Sullivan Fortner, as well as three live tracks. Compared to the previous album, which featured a regular trio and a number with strings, this album, backed only by piano and organ, is extremely simple. However, the simplicity of this album allows her expressive vocals to come to the surface clearly.Opening with Stevie Wonder's classic "Visions," Cecile sang a variety of songs from the American Great Songbook, including pop numbers, Broadway numbers, MPB, and chansons, interacting with the essence of the music. She sings with authenticity and precision, but also expresses her voice with a rich variety of tones and nuances, depending on the occasion. Her singing can be joyful and vivacious, blue and melancholic, slow and swingy, or both. At times, she even acts as an actress in her performances. The piano of Sullivan Fortner, who interacts with Cecil, is also a highlight of this work. Fortner is known to have been trained by Fred Hirsch. His classical technique is outstanding, and his stride piano, swingy rhythmic playing, and simple but lyrical performance show the influence of his teacher. With vocalist Cecil, she paints a world of exquisite interplay. These two artists are young, but both face and express the jazz tradition.The duo creates a fertile world!
