Description:
Kevin Banks & Stanley Jordan, two important guitarists on the American jazz scene in the 80s. Thirty years after meeting at NY55Bar, listen to the musical conversation between these two musicians who respect each other! This is the much-talked-about first collaboration between two guitarists who caused a sensation on the American jazz scene in the 80s and are also innovators. Stanley Jordan, born in Chicago in 1959, is a guitarist who took the world by storm with Magic Touch. His work, created with his transcendent technique and two-handed tapping, became a huge hit not only in the US but also in Japan, and is familiar to fans of the old days. On the other hand, Kevin Banks, born in Philadelphia in 1957, is the nephew of the great pianist Ray Bryant and grew up surrounded by music, with both he and his brother Robin Banks pursuing professional careers.Since their debut in '82, they've consistently walked the major label path with Discovery, GRP, and Blue Note. In America, they're also incredibly famous for serving as musical directors on the super-popular TV show, "The Tonight Show Band." As guitarists, their style of plucking strings alternately with thumb and index finger, without using a pick, has had an undeniable influence on subsequent artists. Yet, despite being such innovators and virtuosos, their sound remains simple, warm, and heartfelt. Though they first met at the legendary New York club 55 Bar—a familiar haunt for guitar fans—and spent 30 years without a definitive collaboration, they hit it off when performing at a jazz festival in the idyllic countryside of British Columbia in 2011. Initially, they focused on touring in a basic solo-plus-solo format. However, in 2013, a soundcheck in a wooden church with exceptional acoustics proved decisive, leading to their collaboration and recording. Coordinating their busy schedules proved extremely difficult. However, the music of these artists, who took ample time to decide on their collaboration, also radiates the depth of their mutual respect. They speak of how, despite being from the same generation, debuting in the same era, and becoming stars, they strangely never felt any competitive spirit towards each other—and listening to their sound makes this deeply understandable. There is no competition whatsoever, and the solo phrasing is friendly, with the overlapping sounds spreading out in beautiful colors, like a watercolor painting, bringing out the best in each other's sounds. In addition to familiar jazz tunes such as "Summer Time," "Nature Boy," and "Blue in Green," they also perform pop ballads such as Adele's "Someone in Love." The poignancy and mature melancholy are irresistible. Along with "Someone in Love," you can also hear Kevin's beautiful piano playing on Sade Jones' famous song "Child Is Born." For Kevin, this was the first song in his life that he wanted to play. (Stanley plays piano on "Blue in Green"). This album showcases the maturity of two guitarists approaching their mid-50s.
