Description:
PERMANENT OPPOSITE is a project that has been moving between guitar pop and indie rock sensibilities, led by songwriter JARED LEIBOWICH, who has been active in the Austin, Texas indie scene for many years. Themes of alienation, depression, love and loss, and the raw sense of searching for one's place in the world are explored in this self-titled debut, which traces the life of one of the main characters. With the local band culture of Austin as a backdrop, PERMANENT OPPOSITE is a piece of music that can be tasted as a continuation of 2020s US indie as an entity that simultaneously embraces post-pop punk melody orientation and post-alterna introspection. The album is produced in a solo project style with JOHN DIETERICH of DEERHOOF as the engineer and LEIBOWICH himself recording all parts in the studio, resulting in a sound that combines Austin's ongoing indie rock with the intimacy of a home recording. The story is told on the first track, "AN ANG", which is the first song on the album. The story begins with the death of the protagonist in the first track, "AN UNRESOLVED FATE," and continues backward in time to a decisive moment in the past as each song progresses. The cool guitar and bouncing rhythm of "AN UNRESOLVED FATE" collide with a sad chord progression, the frustrated tempo and riffs of "THE TAXI RIDE" cut through the city at night, and "I ALWAYS FIND A WAY" brings the strength of melodic guitar pop to the fore, The Gall of a Child" looks at the world's irrationality from the perspective of a child, and "Asking Why" creates a sense of intimate closeness with its faint arpeggios and swaying vocals. While maintaining the catchy guitar pop format, the album deals with depression and self-loss head-on, making it more than just a diary entry, but an album with the density of reliving a person's life. This work will stick with a wide range of listeners, from fans of the Austin indie stream and the DEERHOOF area to those who like narrative guitar pop.
