Jeff Mills’ new project is THE PARADOX!!, a new unit formed with French musician of Guyanese descent, Jean-Phi Dary. Jean-Phi Dary is a multi-instrumentalist who has masterfully expressed influences from Afro-Cuban music, compa, jazz, reggae, and funk using a wide variety of instruments. Jeff Mills, a legendary Detroit techno DJ and producer who has transcended genres as a collaborator in electronic music, has finally completed an album. As you know, the collaborative work between Jeff and the late Tony Allen, “Tomorrow Comes the Harvest,” was outstanding. Jean-Phi participated in that project as a keyboardist. The idea for this new work originated from mini-jam sessions that Jeff (on drum machines and synths) and Jean-Phi (on keyboards) held as a soundcheck before their performances. Building on the inspiration and possibilities born from those sessions, they spent a year conducting live recording sessions at a studio in Paris, resulting in a vast amount of recorded material. “CounterActive” is, in fact, the first part of a two-part series! Jean-Phi Dary is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed with musicians such as Tony Allen, Papa Wemba, Peter Gabriel, and Phoenix, building a career spanning several decades. These six tracks—created through Jeff Mills’s patient collaboration with this top-tier musician, who brings a wide range of techniques and perspectives spanning Caribbean music, Afro, jazz, and soul—are the result of that extensive collaboration. Additionally, the opening track, “SuperSolid,” features Herve Samb from Senegal on guitar. He is a renowned musician who has also released a collaborative album with Daniel Moreno on Joe Claussell’s *Sacred Rhythm* label. NOMIDI, NOCOMPUTER. Mixing and mastering were completed online in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Transcending the boundaries of expression, a new paradigm shift in Detroit techno is upon us.
