A Collection of Madetoja’s Chamber Music! Leevi Madetoja is one of the most important composers of the Finnish late Romantic period. While stylistically following in the footsteps of Sibelius, he never succumbed to mere imitation or emulation of his mentor. Sibelius held him in high regard and is said to have shown him the score of his Symphony No. 8, which he would later burn himself. Madetoja’s music is characterized by a “Finnish” melancholic mood combined with the elegance and sophistication of French music, and like Sibelius’s music, introspection is a core element. He composed across a wide range of genres. His orchestral works include three symphonies and the symphonic poem *Kullervo*, as well as the operas *The People of Ostrobothnia* and *Juha*, the incidental music for the play *Chess*, and the ballet-pantomime *Okon Fuoco*. as well as the *Stabat Mater* for choir and string orchestra, cantatas, works for male chorus, mixed chorus, art songs, and piano pieces. The “Complete Works for Strings and Piano” features Mika Rannali (1971–), who recorded Madetja’s *Complete Piano Works* (ABCD206:1–2). The *Piano Trio in E-flat Minor* is a three-movement work consisting of the weighty and melancholic “Allegro energico” and “Andante, non troppo sostenuto,” and the light-hearted “Allegro vivace.” Premiered in 1909, the same year it was composed, it served as the catalyst for Madetoja’s widespread recognition. The *Violin Sonatina* consists of three movements: the refined and lyrical “Allegro molto moderato” and “Lento moderato,” and the “Allegro vivace” in the style of a “perpetual motion” piece. *Folk Songs of Northern Pohjanmaa* is also known as *Arrangements of Northern Pohjanmaa Folk Songs*. *Lyrical Suite* is a delicate work featuring four well-balanced movements. Anna-Liisa Bezrodny (b. 1981) is a Finnish violinist born in Moscow. Jan-Erik Gustafsson (1970-) played cello with the Engegård Quartet (2005–2010) and has recorded cello concertos by Åre Merikanto and Englund. Tokyo M Plus
