After gaining popularity at the Vienna State Opera, she had a great success as a prima donna at the Berlin State Opera. Because of her Jewish background, she moved to Paris because she disliked the Nazis, and during World War II she was forced to lay low and was unable to perform, so she almost retired. She has a rather old-fashioned voice, but it is beautiful, expressive, and above all, full of lovely charm. This 5-CD collection includes her rare commercial recordings, as well as broadcast recordings made in Paris, and even private recordings, making this a truly complete collection. Tobu Land System
