Description:
A collection of acoustic recordings (mechanical recordings without electrical amplification) of Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976), one of the greatest sopranos of the first half of the 20th century! Born in Perleberg in northeastern Germany, Lehmann made her debut at the Hamburg Opera in 1910, and a few years later became popular in Vienna, where she performed a wide range of roles from daughter to dramatic roles. Averse to the rise of the Nazis, she emigrated to the United States, where she became known both as a singer and a teacher of songs. Lehmann's soft, beautiful voice, which seems to be firmly entwined with the heart, has a truly timeless appeal, especially in these younger songs, which are so easy to listen to despite the old recordings. This Marston CD collects Lehmann's recordings from 1914, when she made her debut in Vienna at the age of 25, to just before she turned 40. The roles of Puccini and Massenet, which were Lehmann's specialties in Vienna, convey the atmosphere of the city's musical capital. Her arias from operas of the same period, such as Korngold's "The City of Death," Dalbert's "The Dead Eye," and Lehar's "Effa," are also valuable. The names of George Sell and Manfred Gurlitt can also be found as accompaniment conductors. The aria "O my dear flower" from Puccini's "Nun Angelica" was deleted by Puccini shortly after this recording, and was not recorded for another 88 years. The "Rose Lieder" is a work by Philip II Eulenburg, a politician famous in modern German history for his role as a private aide to Emperor Wilhelm II who was disgraced in a scandal. As always, Ward Marston's natural and easy-to-hear reprinting is excellent, and the 56-page booklet includes an extensive English-language commentary and rare photographs. Tobu Land System
