Description:
C.E.F. Weyse was born in Holstein in 1774 and moved to Copenhagen at the age of 15. From then on, he honed his skills as a pianist and organist and was appointed organist at a church in Copenhagen. He subsequently composed numerous works as a court composer. Seven symphonies and several Singspiele are still barely known today. Although he belonged to the same generation as Beethoven, his works are more concise and elegant, and one can strongly sense the influence of Mozart, whom he deeply admired. Furthermore, his skillful use of each instrument creates many moments that captivate the listener, making for a truly fascinating compositional style. His vocal music is also superb; works such as the “Seven Evening Songs,” which speak to the soul with deep emotion, even evoke the Romantic style. The “Christmas Cantata,” included on the second disc, is a surprisingly magnificent and lively work. This two-disc set is sure to offer many discoveries. Naxos Japan
