Noago: A Collection of Works for Harp Per Noago [1932–] is the most important Danish composer since Carl Nielsen. He has a particular fondness for the sound of the harp, incorporating it into more than 40 works, including solo and chamber pieces. However, his use of this timbre is highly original. It differs considerably from the romantic sound we typically imagine and may even sound like that of an entirely different instrument. Noago’s compositional style changed significantly over the years, and this is clearly evident in the works included here. From the grand ensemble in “Through the Thicket of Thorns”—titled after a hymn to the Virgin Mary—to the diverse music in “Hedda Gabler,” composed for a televised play (with particularly memorable folk-style passages), you can enjoy the fascinating sounds unique to Noago, a true lover of the harp.
