This album features works composed around 1846. Stous (1804–1849), a master composer, received numerous commissions for pieces intended for various concerts, and he composed appropriate works for each occasion. For example, the 1845 flood of the Vltava River caused significant damage to the region, but “The Sounds of the Vltava,” written to aid in the recovery, became a source of comfort for the people of Prague. “Epion” on Track 6 is the name of the goddess of health (mother of Hygieia) and serves as a stylish title for a piece composed for a medical society ball. Each of these beautiful waltzes showcases Strauss’s mature compositional technique from his later years. Naxos Japan
