Description:
From Klaus’s masterpiece, which Haydn raved about, to Benda’s melodramas, which Mozart adored! Ian Page & the Mozartists delve into the very essence of “Sturm und Drang” in music—the long-awaited fourth installment! The fourth volume in a seven-volume series exploring the “Sturm und Drang” movement that swept through music and other art forms from the early 1760s to the late 1780s. Led by Ian Page, the period instrument ensemble The Mozartists vividly brings to life the musical language of this turbulent era. A highlight of Volume 4 is the “Symphony in C minor, K. 142” by Joseph Martin Kraus, who was the same age as Mozart. This work boasts such a high degree of perfection that Haydn praised it highly, predicting that it “will be regarded as a masterpiece for centuries to come.” Undulating tremolos, syncopation, and the rugged sound of the horns vividly convey the madness and passion sought in the music of that era. Furthermore, the intricate development in the second movement features a structure that foreshadows Beethoven’s later “Fate” Symphony, and it has been suggested that the young Beethoven may have encountered this piece during his time as a violist with the Bonn Court Orchestra—a fact that never ceases to stimulate historical curiosity. Izzy Antonín (Georg Anton) Benda’s *Medea* is a work in the “melodrama” form, in which dialogue is spoken against an orchestral accompaniment. It is said that Mozart, who heard this work in 1778, was deeply moved and incorporated this technique into his own unfinished opera, *Zaide*. The program concludes with Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, “Farewell.” While the famous episode in the final movement—in which the performers exit one by one—tends to take center stage, you will be able to experience anew the high tension and innovation of this music—a true “storm and stress” work—through the sharp, period-instrument-specific approach, highlighted by the relentless syncopation of the first movement and the unique choice of F-sharp minor. “Mozartists” is one of Europe’s leading period instrument ensembles (formerly known as “Classical Opera”), founded by conductor Ian Page. Since 2015, the ensemble has been spearheading “MOZART250,” a groundbreaking 27-year project that retraces Mozart’s life and career year by year. Their previous recording, *Gluck: Arias*, featuring Anne Halenbergi, won the 2025 International Opera Award and has been highly acclaimed for its vivid and dramatic performance. Tokyo M-Plus
