This highly anticipated album reimagines Schubert’s song cycle *Die schöne Müllerin*—a landmark in the history of art song—for baritone and string quartet. Based on poems by Wilhelm Müller, this work marks a turning point in Schubert’s later years, coinciding with the period from late 1822 to early 1823 when he learned of his illness. Composed in 1823, this work tells the story of a young man who dies after experiencing love, and is deeply connected to the composer’s own inner world. Roderick Williams is a renowned baritone representing the British music scene and is also highly regarded as a composer. For this album, he recorded Schubert’s *Die schöne Müllerin*—a special repertoire he has performed as a professional singer for over a decade—in his own arrangement for “baritone and string quartet.” He is joined by the Carducci String Quartet. This ensemble has received international acclaim, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for their project to record all of Shostakovich’s string quartets. In this arrangement, while respecting the musical structure and spirit of the original, the passing of voices and the nuances of the harmony are rendered through the diverse timbres unique to string instruments. While maintaining the basic structure in which the cello plays the bass line and the second violin and viola provide the harmony, the treatment of the first violin is particularly noteworthy. Going beyond mere accompaniment, the first violins take on melodic lines, strengthening the dialogue between the parts and adding new expression to the work.
