This is the second volume in Peter Donohue’s series of Haydn keyboard works. Since winning top prize at the 1982 Tchaikovsky International Competition, Donohue has earned international acclaim for his exceptional musicality, broad stylistic range, and consummate technique. This album features sonatas, partitas, capriccios, and fantasias spanning nearly all of Haydn’s creative periods, from the early “Partita in G Major” to the dramatic “Piano Sonata in A Minor” and works from his mature period in the 1780s. The program traces the development of Haydn’s style and the evolution of the keyboard instrument itself. The *Capriccio in G Major* and *Fantasy in C Major*, both derived from folk songs, shine with simple humor and wit, while each sonata vividly displays elegance, clarity, and depth of expression. Pianist Peter Donohue has a unique background, having also performed as a percussionist with the BBC Philharmonic in his youth. He studied under masters such as Vlad Perlemuter and Olivier Messiaen, and won first prize in the piano category at the 7th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982. With a wide-ranging repertoire centered on Romantic works and 20th-century modern compositions by composers such as Shostakovich and Messiaen, Donohue has enjoyed a successful international career. He enjoys the particular trust of Simon Rattle and has performed with him repeatedly since his time with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Tokyo M-Plus
