An album dedicated to the legendary castrato Nicolini (real name: Niccolò Grimaldi, 1673-1732), who performed the leading roles in Handel's masterpieces Rinaldo and Amadeo, thrilling London audiences. Countertenor Randall Scotting, also a scholar holding a doctorate on castrati, meticulously researched arias written for Nicolini. Beyond Handel's famous arias, this recording includes lesser-known works by Gaspari, Porpora, and Mancini—composers whose librettos Nicolini himself revised and directed (acting as impresario) during his London career. The selection particularly shines in highlighting Niccolini's dramatic side, including the aria from Broschi's Idaspe featuring the scene of "fighting a lion on stage," which caused a sensation in London at the time.Many of the recordings feature new performance editions based on early sources, including works unheard since Nicolini's lifetime—a valuable record.
