In 2019, at the finals of the Tchaikovsky International Competition, Chinese prodigy Tianxu An (安天旭) won 4th Place and a Special Prize despite facing an unusual situation involving a mix-up in the order of the concerto performances. This incident catapulted his name to international fame. This album features piano sonatas by three composers—Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Schumann—who belong to the lineage of German music. Through these works, composed over a span of approximately 26 years, it highlights how the sonata form was expanded and how its expressive range was broadened. At the heart of this recording is a meticulous focus on the composers’ own precise instructions regarding dynamics, pedaling, and phrasing, carefully illustrating how these elements influence the interpretive approach. Recorded in 2024, this album demonstrates Ann’s sincere approach to this repertoire, as well as her deep interest in the intellectual rigor and rich expressiveness inherent in these works.
