Tenebre is a British chamber choir founded in 2001 by Nigel Short, who previously served as a member of the Tallis Scholars, the Westminster Abbey Choir, the Westminster Cathedral Choir, and the King’s Singers. Tenebre Consort, a small vocal ensemble comprising members of Tenebre—an ensemble that Colin Davis also frequently featured—performs Thomas Tallis’s “Lamentations of Jeremiah” and “Medieval Chant (Plainchant).” This program—comprising the art of Tallis and Shepherd, who lived through the Reformation, and plainchant—guides us on an exploration of the choral tradition established in England during the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance.
