This album, the last recorded by the current members, features classical repertoire with a renowned soprano singer. The album title, "Such stuff as dreams are made on," is a line from Shakespeare's The Tempest, which is also used as a lyric in Vaughan Williams' "Shakespeare's Song No. 2". Much of the European choral music of the early 20th century (and before and after) has been shaped and marred by the ghosts of the conflicts that dominated the continent during that era.In the shadow of war, composers took themes of death, captivity, and horror and balanced them with inspiration from home: poetry, history, and countryside that captured the best of their country. These nostalgic and haunting memories of France, Germany, and England have become emblematic of the "Romantic" genre, and this is best captured by Rafe Vaughan Williams, whose song "The Cloud-Covered Tower" is a Shakespearean monologue. In Vaughan Williams' "Three Shakespearean Songs," the centerpiece of the program, it was difficult to fit the eight parts into six voices, so the orchestra invited the renowned sopranos Grace Davidson and Victoria Meteyard, who were also friends of the members, to join them for this recording. Their voices fit beautifully with the sound and style of the King's Singers and add a new dimension to the repertoire they have built up. Through this recording, the audience is transported to the English countryside as Vaughan Williams and Elgar would have known it. *Recordings:April 30, May 1, 6-8, 2024, St. Nicholas Church, Kemerton, England.
