Fretwork, founded in 1986 by renowned viola da gamba players such as Asako Morikawa and Richard Boothby, is the world’s premier viola da gamba consort, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2021. On this album, we explore the court music of England’s Tudor dynasty through the works of Thomas Lupo. Lupo was a composer and viol player active in England from the Renaissance through the Baroque period. He left behind a vast number of pieces for viol consort, and their diversity and high quality are truly astonishing. While the three-part fantasias retain a somewhat rough-hewn quality, the five- and six-part fantasias, by contrast, are often striking, showcasing magnificent works that make full use of counterpoint.
