A new opera by Gerald Barry based on *Alice in Wonderland*!! The world’s first recording of a new opera by Gerald Barry! *Alice in the Underworld*, inspired by *Alice in Wonderland* and *Through the Looking-Glass*! Irish composer Gerald Barry (b. 1952) garnered attention in 2020—the Year of Beethoven—with a series of recordings of works themed around Beethoven (SIGCD616, 639, 659). The world premiere recording of his new opera, *Alice’s Adventures Underground*, was performed by the Irish National Opera—making its debut on Signum Classics. The opera combines Lewis Carroll’s classic fairy tale *Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland* with its sequel, *Through the Looking-Glass*. The libretto was also written by the composer, Gerald Barry. The music is uniquely Barry’s own; although it is a short, one-act opera, it is crafted to captivate the audience at various points—for example, by incorporating a partial quotation from Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” In this production, with the exception of Alice, each singer plays multiple roles. While it had its world premiere in concert form in 2016 and its world stage premiere in 2020, approximately half of the singers featured in this recording are the same as those from those performances.
