Description:
Fretwork at 35: seventeenth-century laments sung by Iestyn Davies Iestyn Davies, one of the finest countertenors of our time and a source of pride to British music, joins the viol consort Fretwork, which celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2021. A collection of seventeenth-century German laments for viol consort and voices. Iestyn Davies is a British countertenor renowned worldwide for his beautiful, agile voice and his intelligent musicianship. He has won two Gramophone Awards and a Grammy, has been nominated for an Olivier Award, and was appointed MBE in 2017. Fretwork was founded in 1986 by distinguished viol players including Asako Morikawa and Richard Boothby, and marked its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2021 as one of the world's leading viol consorts. Their 2019 album If (SIGCD586), which paired Michael Nyman with Henry Purcell, was named a Gramophone Editor's Choice (May 2019) and Critic's Choice (December 2019). For their next collaboration they turn to a beautiful body of seventeenth-century German music for viol consort and voices, joined by the organist Silas Wollston - who has played continuo with the English Baroque Soloists as Gardiner's assistant - and the countertenor Hugh Cutting, who has appeared with Les Arts Florissants and The English Concert and took part in The King's Consort's new Purcell recording. The programme gathers melancholy laments by early seventeenth-century German composers: Schein, Scheidt and Schütz; Johann Christoph Bach, the most important member of the Bach family before Johann Sebastian; Franz Tunder, Buxtehude's predecessor as organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck; Christian Geist, a north German active in Copenhagen; and Giovanni Felice Sances, the Roman-born composer who served three successive emperors in Vienna. All are spun with sure technique and unfailing sincerity. Tokyo M-Plus
