Christopher Maltmann (Moltmann) is a British operatic baritone who studied voice at the Royal Academy of Music and performs at major opera houses around the world. He is particularly well known for his portrayal of “Don Giovanni” in London, Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Salzburg, Amsterdam, Toulouse, San Sebastián, Beijing, Chicago, New York, and Edinburgh, and is also internationally active as a singer of Schubert and Mahler lieder. In Japan as well, he has frequently given successful performances, including at the Tokyo Spring Music Festival 2016 and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra’s production of “Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius.” “The Soldier” is a program deeply dear to Martmann’s heart, one he created during his time at music academy and has continued to develop over the past 20 years. Centered on World War I, the program explores the theme of war victims from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. It combines songs by George Butterworth and Arthur Summerwell—set to poems from Alfred Edward Houseman’s poetry collection *A Shropshire Lad*—with works by Mahler, Fauré, Schumann, and Poulenc.
