In the eighth installment of the series, Principal Guest Conductor Charles Mackerras makes his second appearance since his Schubert recording (SIGCD133)! The program features Dvořák’s Symphonies Nos. 7 and 8, drawn from his signature Czech repertoire! In collaboration with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, he has produced masterful recordings such as Mozart’s late symphonies (Linn/CKD308), Beethoven’s piano concertos (Linn/CKD336), the complete Beethoven symphonies (Hyperion/CDS44301/5), among other acclaimed recordings. Now approaching his mid-80s, Mackerras shows not the slightest sign of slowing down and continues to evolve relentlessly. Having honed his craft in Prague, Czechoslovakia, during his student days, Mackerras specializes in the Czech repertoire, particularly the operas of Janáček; consequently, expectations are inevitably high for his performances of Dvořák’s Symphonies Nos. 7 and 8, works by the giant of the Czech National School. Through his repeated collaborations with the Philharmonia Orchestra—with whom he has built an unshakable bond of trust—Mackerras brings the spirit of the Czech Republic to life in their sound.
