Thanks to a new partnership between the Philharmonia Orchestra and Sigmund Classics, a massive-scale series featuring rare recordings from the Philharmonia Orchestra’s archives is now underway! The first commemorative release in this series—marking its debut—is a highly anticipated, heavyweight program featuring Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 and No. 4, conducted by current Principal Conductor Kristóf von Dohnányi! Dohnányi, who was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1994, became Principal Conductor in 1997. Needless to say, his achievements with the Cleveland Orchestra—one of the “Big Five” American orchestras, where he served as music director until 2002 as the successor to Mazel—are well-documented; he has also left a significant mark on the history of the Philharmonia Orchestra, one of Britain’s major orchestras, as its chief conductor. It has been decided that Dohnányi will hand over the post of principal conductor to Esa-Pekka Salonen in September 2008 and assume the title of Conductor Laureate (as of August 2008); therefore, this new Brahms release marks a fitting finale to his 11-year tenure as “Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra.” Incidentally, while Dohnányi recorded the complete Brahms symphonies during his time with the Cleveland Orchestra, the number of recordings is by no means large; therefore, this release of recordings made in collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra is undoubtedly a must-have for fans.
