The Mystery of Do-Re-Mi This fascinating album is based on a new theory suggesting that the solfège scale “Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Si-Do”—previously believed to have been devised by the medieval Italian monk Guido d’Arezzo—actually originated in an ode by the ancient Roman poet Horace. This CD features Horace’s “Ode to Philis”—identified as the origin of “Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Si-Do” according to the theory of British scholar Stewart Lyons—in two versions: a “Latin Version,” which is a modern arrangement of this work from over 2,000 years ago, and “British Version”—both modern adaptations of this work from over 2,000 years ago—as well as D’Arezzo’s “Hymn to St. John.” The vocals are performed by Gabitas, a baritone with the King’s Singers.
