Description:
Using viola, cello, violin, vocals, and manual manipulation of analog tape, they weave a unique sound where tranquility and unease intertwine through improvisation. A must-listen for fans of Eiko Ishibashi and Laurie Anderson The trio of Whitney Johnson, Lia Kohl, and Macie Stewart uses string instruments—viola, cello, and violin—along with vocals and manual manipulation of analog tape to weave a unique sound that intertwines tranquility and unease through improvisation. Each member brings a background of deep sonic exploration, multidisciplinary composition, and genre-spanning collaborations, with their credits featuring key figures from a wide range of scenes, including experimental music, electronic, and indie rock. Their debut album *BODYSOUND*, released via *International Anthem*, is a work grounded in improvisation featuring the three members’ voices and string instruments. The performances take shape intuitively, centered on a process of “listening to and reacting to” one another’s sounds. Drawing on a flexible musical philosophy nurtured within Chicago’s improvisational music community, they treat the space itself as an instrument, incorporating the resonances created by the venue and its acoustics into their work. Recorded at multiple locations—including InternationalAnthem Studios and Shirk Studios in Chicago, as well as the BigEars Festival venue—the post-production process, led by engineer and co-producer Dave Vettraino, made extensive use of analog tape. By employing multiple tape machines to reconstruct the improvisations through looping and editing, they create a multidimensional soundscape where improvisation and composition overlap. The album features a sound that combines deep resonance with quiet elation, evoking the sensation of fragments of lost folk music. Across all 11 tracks—including track titles inspired by Yoko Ono’s seminal work *Grapefruit*—the artist explores delicate textures and spatial resonance. The result is a work that unfolds a mysterious and rich soundscape, blending tranquility with experimentalism.
