The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra of Athens (MSO), founded by Athenian composer, conductor and pianist Vassilis Tsavropoulos (Music Director & Chief Conductor of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra of Athens), has released its first album "Musica Sacra (Church Music) Series" on its own label "MSO". MSO", an independent label of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra of Athens (founded by the music director & principal conductor of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra of Athens), presents a collection of Byzantine chants sung a cappella by Nektalia Kalantzi, a Greek Byzantine chant singer who also sang beautifully in Tsavropoulos' works on the label's first album (MSOA001) as "Musica sacra" (church music) series. Byzantine chant is a Greek chant with its own scale sung in the rite of consecration in Orthodox churches, which developed around the 4th century and is still sung daily in modern times.The album traces the Byzantine chant tradition and history with a wide selection of early Christian hymns such as "Gladsome Light" and "Christ is Risen," hymns dedicated to the Theotokos (Virgin Mary), the focus of Carranzi's recent research, and hymns for Lent and Holy Week.
