King Crimson’s 1971 fourth album *ISLANDS*—which has been undergoing a resurgence in popularity in recent years—is being reissued as a heavyweight LP in the “Elemental Mix” edition, featuring a “second” studio album created by mixing a vast number of alternate takes! King Crimson, one of the leading bands of progressive rock, recorded this as their only studio album with the lineup of Robert Fripp (g), Mel Collins (fl/sax/vo), Boz Burrell (b/vo), and Ian Wallace (drs/perc). It is also a transitional work—the last album to feature Pete Sinfield, who contributed significantly to the band’s early days not only through his musical performances but also through stage lighting and other non-musical aspects—while simultaneously serving as the seed for the works that followed *Larks’ Tongues* and beyond. stage lighting—made a significant contribution to the band’s formative years beyond the musical realm. Although it is a transitional work, it also serves as the seed for the band’s later works following *Larks’ Tongues*—featuring intense, tension-filled improvisations on guitar, saxophone, and melotron that can be seen as the seeds of their work following *LARKS’TONGUES~*; and the ballad “Islands,” with its exquisite, delicate, and acoustic expression that feels like the culmination of early Crimson—both of which are highly popular among fans. With songs from this 1971 fourth album, *ISLANDS*, increasingly being performed at live shows since the 2014 reunion and gaining renewed appreciation in recent years, is being reissued in ’26 as a limited-edition 200g vinyl release featuring the “Elemental Mix” by David Singleton—a “second” studio album created using multitrack recordings and a vast number of alternate takes, a format now familiar from the 50th-anniversary editions of recent years! It uses a cutting master by Jason Mitchell of LoudMastering.
