Born January 25, 1929, he was 86 years old at the time of this recording on December 7, 2015—a fact that's astonishing in itself, but you'll be even more stunned when you hear the music. His previous album, which could be called a revival of his group with the young Art Farmer, already featured a powerful frontline. This time, however, he leads a one-horn project, retaining the exact same rhythm section from that previous work. The impeccable piano trio of Mike Rudden, Buster Williams, and Carl Allen is in top form once again. Backed by this trio, Benny Golson delivers a delightfully smooth performance, swinging effortlessly in 4/4 time. Of course, it's not about powerful up-tempo playing, but the tasteful medium-tempo performances firmly prove he can still hold his own against younger musicians! In fact, the relaxed playing born of rich experience exudes a dignity lost in contemporary jazz, evoking the best of 50s and 60s hard bop.This album showcases a musician who truly stands apart, having made his mark in groups like the Art Farmer duo and Art Blakey's legendary Jazz Messengers. His charm as a composer shines through, and his ballad rendition of Ellington's classic "Mood Indigo," interspersed among the swing numbers, is simply superb. *Track 9 features Benny Golson discussing melody and improvisation, lavishing praise on Carl Allen's playing. On the final track, Allen—the very drummer Golson extols—delivers a melodic solo performance.
