Cyrus Chestnut is one of the leading pianists of his generation. After a one-year absence, here comes his second transfer with HighNote. He was raised in a privileged musical environment, with a father who was a church organist and a mother who was a choir director, and joined Jon Hendricks' group in 1986. In the 90's, he played in the band of Wynton Marsalis and Betty Carter, whom many musicians look up to as a great mentor. The style is a swingy trio sound with no second-guessing. Once again, the trio is joined by the rhythm section of Buster Williams and Lenny White, and the combination of the three is, of course, outstanding. The opening number, "Mamacita," composed by Joe Henderson, features bluesy harmonies and block chords reminiscent of Hancock in the 60's, which will tickle the hearts of fans.This time, of course, the four-beat swing of very well-known standards such as "It Could Happen to You" is appealing, as is the good old-fashioned melancholy of "I Cover the Waterfront," also known as the famous song by Billie Holiday. Also, the ballad "My Romance," a famous Rodgers & Hart number so well known for its performance by Bill Evans, is also a tender ballad. While mastering the swingy, royal piano, Cyrus also plays these ballads romantically and stylishly, as one would expect from him! The trio's performance is a triumph of the past, and the 50s have brought a sense that the accumulation of the past has led to a more dignified sound. This is the second release after the move to a new venue, and it is also attractive that the trio is able to express themselves more freely.
