So Savoeun

Description:

A voice that evokes memories of Cambodia's pre-Pol Pot golden age pop/rock scene - the brilliance of So SavornIn the 1960s and 1970s, Phnom Penh was filled with music. Rock, traditional music, and crooners fused the music of East and West to create a unique Cambodian pop music full of hope and modernity. One of those at the center of it all was Sor Savorn. Her voice, silky yet powerful, intimate yet expansive, heralded the arrival of a new era. This retrospective is the first full-fledged collection of her work, featuring rare recordings of her. Included are duets with legendary artists such as Meas Saman and Lek Savas, who were active during the golden age of Khmer music, including the great musician Sin Sisamot, the "King of Khmer Music," who was active at the same time, and every piece has more meaning than mere music. They are fragments of memory, reverberations of a night when Phnom Penh's dance halls and radios were filled with rhythm and possibility. In his own words, to make these songs available to the world again is like opening a jewel box buried under the dust of history. Her voice, thought to be lost, is revived as an eternal call that connects silence and memory, like the chirping of cicadas in the forest. This work is not mere nostalgia. It is a testimony, a rebirth. It resonates not only with those who lived through the golden age, but also with a new generation that is experiencing its beauty for the first time. The past comes to life again. When the Khmer Rouge (Pol Pot faction) occupied Phnom Penh, she fled to Thailand and then to France. As a result, she became one of the surviving singers of Cambodia's golden age, and her release on the French exile label Akuphone is also of great historical significance. Akuphone has been reissuing rare grooves from all over the world from the 1950s to the 1980s, and in the past has also released albums by Cambodian artists such as Mol Kamach, so keep your eyes peeled for more releases from this label.
