The 22nd release in Richter’s Archive Series! Performing with Zanderling and Barshai A masterful performance by Richter in his 50s, at the peak of his career! Richter was one of the 20th century’s greatest masters, with a vast repertoire. Among all the composers he performed, Beethoven held a special place. The 22nd installment of DOREMI’s Richter Series is an all-Beethoven program. The performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 with Zanderling and the Gewandhaus Orchestra features Richter at age 48 and Zanderling at age 50. The passion of Richter in his prime and Zanderling’s intense conducting convey the raw energy of a live performance. The Symphony No. 3 is a live recording from Moscow with Barshai. Although Richter has recorded Symphony No. 3 with Zanderling, Kondrashin, Muti, and others, this performance is also stunning in its intensity, as the powerful energies of these two masters collide. Also included is a recording of a Beethoven recital in Germany in 1986. When it comes to the 1986 “Diabelli Variations,” the live recording from the Prague Spring Festival is considered one of Richter’s definitive performances.
