This release features a recording from her broadcast session at NDR in Hamburg on March 16, 1960, released on CD for the first time. It’s also a delight that it includes a recording from her broadcast session at WDR in Cologne on September 8 of the same year. Both are previously unreleased recordings. Prokofiev and Ravel are renowned for their challenging works, but the 19-year-old Argerich’s performance—bursting with youthful energy and brilliance—completely conquers these pieces, delivering a thrilling, spine-tingling experience. While her technical brilliance goes without saying, her rich, lustrous tone and overwhelming concentration are nothing short of divine—a masterful artistry that only Argerich can achieve. Prokofiev’s masterpiece, “Piano Sonata No. 7,” is filled with a freshness that makes it sound as if I’m hearing it for the very first time. Furthermore, “Piano Sonata No. 3” is an extremely rare recording, as it is part of a repertoire that Argenteau has never recorded elsewhere. This, too, is more breathtaking than I could have imagined. Ravel’s performance is also astonishingly brilliant. Her superb sense of rhythm and brilliant tone keep you spellbound. The intensity of “Gaspard de la Nuit,” in particular, is astonishing—a level of maturity that’s hard to believe comes from a 19-year-old girl.
