Born into a Polish Jewish family, Weinberg spent most of his tumultuous life in Soviet Russia, where he left behind many works. Although he did not achieve international fame during his lifetime, his reputation has been growing rapidly in recent years. This album contains three concerto works. The album features three concerto pieces, with Peter Wispelway's virtuosity as a solo cello player. The Cello Concertino, the basis for the Cello Concerto Op.43, was recently rediscovered and was written in just four days in 1948. The Fantasy for Cello and Orchestra was written in 1953, at a time when freedom of expression was restricted. Chamber Symphony No. 4" was Weinberg's last work, composed between April and May 1992 while he was dying. It is composed for solo clarinet, string orchestra, and triangle.
